Central Cooked Food Store 中環大排檔

Cooked food stores (Dai Pai Dong) is a unique characteristic in Hong Kong.  It originated after the Second World War.  They are cooked food stored opened at street lane.  It's kind of an iron box within whick owner is cooking and guests eating around on folded chair or stool.  As the society develops, this historic restaurant diminishes.  Even there was a proposal to demolish all of them.  But as it is part of Hong Kong's collective memory, some of them are allowed to extend the license with government's help on laying out essential facilities to liven the street food stores again.  One famous area is around the Staveley Street in Central.  They were closed to reconstruct the infrastructure this late summer to facilitate the installation of safe electricity, water, gas, etc.  As the reconstructure has been gradually completed, the scene of guests crowding the place reappears.  There are 3 reasons for the keeping customers coming back:
  • Good food
  • Memory of Hong Kong unique food culture
  • Good value for money

Stir Fried Noodle 乾炒牛河
As a impromptu, Hedy and I tried one of the cooked food stores, Sing Kee, at Staveley Street last Friday.  We ordered stired fried beef noodle and a vegetable fish soup.  They were tasty.  The fish was very fresh.  We both liked it very much.  The noodle was good, though not excellent.  We paid only HK$58 only.  A bargain, big value for money.

Veg Fish Soup 芥菜魚湯
Guys sitting in the same table allowed me to take shots of their dishes.  Looks good and yummy. They are braised beef brisket with parsnip and stir fried squid.  I wanna try another time.  Give it a go but be prepared to wait because every dish is freshly cooked. Good food requires patience.
